My complaint email to MLB regarding their new DirectTV deal for the extrainnings package, which means fans everywhere will have to black out their local team in order to see any other team in baseball play games on TV:
Dear MLB,
I will be very angry if you allow one provider to monopolize the extra innings package such as has been reported you may. I cannot see how this is anything but a “money grab†for MLB and frankly a black eye for years to come. The fans are the ones who pay the price, and the fans are the only reason MLB continues to exist. In an era where national interest is so high in not only one’s native team but in the accomplishments and play of all 30 teams, such a decision closes a window which should only be made wider, for the good of the game. I am a Comcast subscriber who is unable to get satellite TV due to restrictions in my lease, if I even felt comfortable switching technology which I don’t – I do not understand why a deal such as this must be exclusive. To make it so can only be about lining the pockets of the ruling parties in MLB, and not the true core of the game – the fans. MLBTV online is simply not an acceptable (or high enough quality) option to offer as an alternative
I hope the reporting has been in error, and MLB will continue to look for ways to bring more fans tighter into the wonderful world of baseball, not take actions which drive them away.
Regards,
Charles Danner
